Fashion Photographer Arrested for Possession

Jennifer Tzar was busted for 10lbs of pot after police investigated a large fire in her SoHo apartment. When the blaze took down 6 other apartments, police found green in plastic baggies and glass jars and charged her with first-degree criminal possession of marijuana. Immediately, I am wondering if any dope photos by Jennifer exist. If not, high-fashion stoner photography must happen before I die.

Some of Tzar's photography:

A stoner interpretation could lead to a photo taken in a field of hemp...
...Could she be holding a spliff?
In the film Grandma's Boy, the characters smoke weed potent enough to imagine they grew deer antlers.
Did Lily Cole and Jennifer Tzar toke something similar together?

Je Suis High

Whenever I see someone wearing something relating to weed and fashion, I always make a point to chat with them. During a stroll, a friendly girl chases me down to get video shots of my outfit, just like how I chat to stoner strangers.

She caught me on a Dark side of Oz meets Romy and Michelle style day. Catch me On Je Suis TV's summer street style video at 1:38 minutes in!

Nobody knows...

Tell' em Barbie! Furthermore, living in a high society everyday the majority are getting high from a wide variety of mainstream legal sources. Cannabis is less harmful to society than alcohol, cigarettes, junk food, coffee, and even peanut butter. Nobody knows, and nobody cares, and I am not a threat to society!

Barbie's Adventures: Vanity Vandalism and Guerilla Gardening

In Toronto I found my favourite monument in the fashion district. Right along Spadina between Queen West and King there’s a giant thimble on a stack of buttons, a yellow-brick-road measuring tape, and button planters. A few clones were dying and needed a good home, water, and sunshine. Didn’t have much time to save them, so Babrie did some guerilla gardening in the middle of the night.

Fuck the fashion police! Demand more hemp now!

I'm going to keep documenting how these girls are doing

Happy 420 :D

2011 Global Marijuana March: Stash Box Barbie’s Big Weekend

Easily, this past weekend could have been one of the best in my life. After last year’s protest festivities at Toronto Freedom Festival and Global Marijuana March, I promised myself that I wanted to learn about activism against prohibition and help the people who ran these events. A few months later, I walked into Vapor Central alone for the first time, sat beside a complete stranger Madd Chronic, and explained how I was passionate to get involved. This weekend marks a period in my life where things have really come full circle.
This has been an incredible year, ever since I met
Madd Chronic and discovered the importance of activism.

My plan for Friday was to prepare for the march by finishing my Stash Box Barbie costume, packing up the Barbie bong, and pre-rolling doobies. When HotBox Café called me while I was canna-crafting fake bud, and wanted me to stop in that afternoon as their new hemployee, I knew it was only the beginning of a great weekend.
After the adventure around Kensington Market, I found myself baked wandering town. Lately, whenever I’m in in the crosshairs of boredom, I will flip a coin to choose my next destination. Immediately after this flip, I ran into Budd Cannabis and real-life hero Matt Mernagh who happened to be tokin’ with visitors from B.C like Jodie Emery, Dana Larsen, and Jeremiah Vandermeer.

Trust yourself and that coin will flip on the proper side, and eventually you’ll end up sitting beside your very own mentors. Too shy to say very much, I just let my smile communicate for me. These are people I really believe in, and potentially they could believe in me.

Chatting with Dana Larsen as he checks out the box.
Being on the inside, it's a little difficult trying to sesh with others!

May 7th starts very early at 6 a.m because I wanted to be a prepared soldier in this drug war with hot pink Bristol board armor, my threatening smile, and potent marijuana smoke. Butterfly is at my house for 11 a.m, and next thing I know I am inside my own personal hotbox unable to walk because of everyone wanting to snap my photo.
Bong Man, the perticular fellow who inspired me
to create my costume.

Dressing as Stash Box Barbie, my goal was to finish the entire march in my bud heels to make a loud statement regarding cannabis and prohibition. With the box, I was able to have 4 protest signs opposed to one, with “Believe in Hemp!”, “I’m not a criminal!”, and “Think outside the box” on each of the sides.
Posing with two heros of mine: Matt Mernagh and Cannabis. In less than 60 days, if the medical marijuana program doesn't significantly improve then marijuana will be legal in Ontario thanks to Merngah!
Sunday afternoon, while at Vapor Central, I am reflecting on the historic outcome of the GMM. Just as I was hoping that I could have found the courage to ask for a picture with Jodie Emery, she walks in the door. The timing couldn't have been perfect, and I knew I had to take a toke, a deep breath and make my way on over to her table. In no time Jodie's passing me joints while Jeremiah is complimenting me on my unusual pill-popper barrette, and I am eating my munchies as if this is any normal sesh with stoner friends.

Peace & Pot, let's end this drug war!
This weekend I received more than a surreal smoke sesh on cloud nine with the Cannabis Culture crew. Realizing the lesson of trusting yourself and following your heart is the greatest high, even if it is illegal.

Celebrate and Medicate! Photos of April 20th Yonge and Dundas Rally.

Marching from Vapor Central. End prohibition!

Toking on stage with my fellow cannabis crusaders Madd Chronic and Naomi.

Bong Man, you're my hero!

Toronto Sun asked me why it is important to attend pro-pot rallies before the election.

Matt Mernagh and Tracy gave me the best gift of pot pixie wings!

Horsing around with BMInnovators, the guys from The Oracle vaporizer.

Stash Box Barbie

Meet Stash Box Barbie. Living in a stash box opposed to a dream house, there is only enough room for her bud and clothing.

She is the only Barbie who thinks outside of the box and always enjoys cannabis before playing dress-up! Follow her adventure just like her permanent smoke cloud.

Nug Porn Star: Hash Plant

After enjoying a hash bash last night, I knew Mernagh's Hash Plant would conjure up a smokey charcoal-gold style.

Hemp, Hemp, Hooray! Open Minds Makes for More Hemp Fashion

Ignorance about hemp textiles and fabrics creates a lack of pieces and collections in fashion industry. Watch as EcoPop TV's host gets her mind blown by learning and seeing hemp in fashion industry.

Mind Control Through Fashion Trends: Industry Expert Describes “Fashion Zeitgeist”

The very best aspect of fashion is how creative and innovative a living necessity can become. We must wear clothing everyday, and fashion transforms to wearable art for the industry geniuses.

People always ask why the garments on a runway are so “out-there” and unusual, it seems like not a single person would actually wear any of it. In fashion school, professors taught me that it’s all as simple as repeated cycles of different trends. A runway acts as a showcase for all these new trends, which will be popular in that season.

Colours, patterns,  and textures can style a runway to retail transition
Every designer will focus on a few main trends to make their collection cohesive. The real money in fashion industry comes from the adaptation of couture to ready-to-wear. The trends on the runway are dramatically watered down in order for everyday people to wear the looks.

Today in Metro Times style section, an article titled, “Where do fashion trends come from?” explains the redundancy of fashion and that every season fashion collections are looking too similar to one another. The reason behind the copy-cat styles is textile mills hold bi-yearly fairs in Paris and Italy displaying the different materials available.

Very little variance between runway shows these days.
Kevin Carrigan, Global Creative Director of Calvin Klein describes the process for designers,

“From these fabric fairs, designers begin to decipher the major global trends of the season with each house interpreting the inspiration in it’s own way and putting their spin on the fashion zeitgeist.”

The article goes on to describe the trickle-down theory of runway to retail, “Once a collection is shown, a whole copy-cat cycle begins where designers mimic what they see being done by fashion leaders such as Miccuia Prada, Marc Jacobs, Alber Elbaz and Pheobe Philo among others."

Fashion leaders and textile mills are in complete control of what trends, symbols, and messages we receive from the fashion industry. Clothing is a necessity for us to survive, and yet the industry remains regressive rather than progressive. Are fashion designers actually addressing the real issues within their job? Not if they are only capable of showcasing a handful of trends two times a year on the world’s most beautiful supermodels.

If runway is in fact just a showcase of different optical illusions achieved with the model’s body plus silhouettes, patterns, colours, textures, and line, then why are the guidelines for a model’s appearance so strict? Easily a designer could think outside of the box and design entire runway collections for individuals with fit issues.

Each and everyone of us is beautiful.
Adapting the trends from runway to retail would be the exact same process, even if non-conventional models, like little people or people in wheelchairs were on the runway. This idea would inspire and draw a lot of positive attention to women who are used to being neglected by fashion. As a perfect example, the only runway show I have ever seen was Cheri Milaney for Fall 2009 at Toronto Fashion Week, where her and model agent, Ben Barry teamed up to inspire the courageous souls of not models, but real women including breast cancer survivors. These women looked more beautiful than models, because they’re beauty was from within.

Cheri Milaney Fall 2009
When textile mills and fashion leaders decide fashion trends, then there is absolutely no excuse as to why hemp cannot be one of the majour materials showcased on the runway. Being a miracle fiber, it’s achieved varied appearance makes hemp the most valuable fabric, for the amount of different trends hemp can produce. Using inferior fabrics solely for “cost” reasons stunts the growth on hemp fashion and makes for a regressive industry. The proof of lack of thinking behind fashion trends makes it obvious that hemp can be a successful trend, a fashion leader just actually needs to use it.

Mountains of the Moon hemp fashion
When these “fashion leaders” for decades put an ultra-thin, emotionless robotic beauty measuring at least 5’7” in height on a conveyor belt runway, adorned in synthetics, I question that maybe fashion industry actually acts as mind-control against our own selves rather than a creative outlet.

Fembot Fashion
Our appointed “fashion leaders” work more like fascist dictators by minimizing opportunities, resisting positive change, and ignoring important design innovations, that would lead to comfort and happiness for many who are ignored from enjoying fashion. If I am incorrect about the fascism in fashion, then designers will change the shallow elements of their shows. Showcasing new collections twice a year, the clothing in runway shows and trends reads more like a fashion police uniform that is so well camouflaged because it’s appearance is changed every six months.

Fashion industry already has a negative stigma about the cut-throat competition standard. Director of the A.A.S Fashion Design Program at Parsons School of Fashion describes the obvious visual outcome of the competition, which “often leads to redundancy and lack of trust in their own self expression.”

The only way to break this cycle is to believe in the importance of self-awareness. When young designers are so intimidated by competition, their ideas are more likely suffocated than embraced, then the industry has absolutely no hope for growing. Without believing and trusting personal ideas, it is inevitable that we will be caught in mid mind-war of the zeitgeist movement of fashion.

Airing Out the Blog Smog

Almost every fashion blog I have ever seen is just the writer posting photos of their latest “must-haves”, just endless images of the latest trends. This could work, but I doubt anyone actually cares. Sorry “blogistas”, but your contribution to cyber space is just as stale as an unfinished bong toke.

Being said, this is one of the only times I will do this, but I came across two t-shirts from Hemp Hoodlamb from previous seasons. The chances I will ever own either of these shirts barely exists, but the messages of the t-shirts can easily be passed from season-to-season without looking too trendy or out of date.

Advice for Gaga: Less Smoking More Edibles

This week on 60 Minutes during an interview, Lady Gaga opens up about drinking whiskey and toking up,

“I drink a lot of whiskey, and I smoke weed when I write. I don’t do it a lot, because it’s not good for my voice.  I don’t want to encourage kids to do drugs, but when you asked me about the sociology of fame and what artists do wrong, what artists do wrong is they lie and I don’t lie, I’m not a liar. I built goodwill with my fans, they know who I am, and I am just like them in so many ways.”
Meat Dress: you are what you eat
Of course Lady Gaga isn’t exactly a liar, but better yet she’s a by-stander bully who is open about using the benefits of marijuana to gain financial growth, yet isn’t willing to actually defend it. Given the chance, she even expressed that she didn’t want to encourage kids to do drugs.
The Puppet Master is Between Her Legs
Unfortunately “fame monsters” have such an influence on the mass consciousness, where Ansliger’s game of telephone is continued through interviews such as this. Lady Gaga would feel completely different if she met an incredible young person like Hayley Jade Rose, a lovely teenager and youngest licensed medical marijuana patient.

Easily, Lady Gaga is one of the most influential people in fashion, making this a perfect opportunity for her to redeem herself after this interview by impressing us with hemp creations. She also must smoke seldom amounts of weed, or else her music would be good, and her stoner friend would have passed along the message that she could save her voice if she only ate edibles.

Penny Lane Looks at Fall 2011 Tracy Reese Runway Show

Style.com describes Tracy Reese's fall collection as, "Expanded on the seventies theme that has been working in her favor, sales-wise, the past several seasons, except this time around the "Groovy, Babe" vibe was less overt. While a long, faux shearling coat and "dreamy floral" bell-sleeve dress were very Penny Lane inAlmost Famous, the high-waisted trousers with a subtle flare  would do most girls' gams some serious justice."

There's no doubt that you could meet your favourite musicians while dressing like Penny Lane, but remember you're a Band-Aid and not a groupie.
